How do I get to El Remanso?

Most of the international flights arrive in San José (Juan Santamaría International Airport) and some of them arrive in Liberia (Daniel Odúber Quirós International Airport). We recommend that you fly to San José because in order to get to us the connections to the Osa Peninsula are much easier from there. The closest town to reach us is Puerto Jiménez (we are 22 km away) but we can also help you reach us from Golfito or any part of Costa Rica!

There are basically two ways of getting to us: by air or by land.

Domestic flights

There are 2 main airlines that fly to Puerto Jiménez from San José with several daily flights: Nature Air and Sansa.
We can easily help you to arrange these flights with no extra cost. Please let us know, and we will take care of the reservations.

Both airlines fly in and out around similar times:

SJO – PJM: 6 am, 8.30 am, 11 am, 3 pm (only from Dec-May)
PJM – SJO: 7 am, 9.30 am, 12 pm, 4 pm (only from Dec-May)

If you provide us with your international flight schedule we will help you match the best connections.

You need to consider that if you want to fly to us the same day as your international flight arrives into San Jose, you need to be landing at least before noon, and if you want to fly out from us the same day as your departure day, your international flight should not be taking off from San Jose before 10 am.

If you travel with a big group we can also help you with special Charter Flights.

Car Rentals

If you wish, you can also drive from San José to us. It’s an 8 hour drive bur with very nice views along the way.
We can also help you with these arrangements and we usually work with 2 Rental Car companies: Pura Vida Rent a Car and Solid Car Rental

Please bear in mind that in order to rent a car in Costa Rica you will need a valid driver’s license and a credit card where they will hold a warranty deposit of at least $1,000 (it could be more depending on the car type)

You might also prefer to fly into Puerto Jiménez and rent a car there for easier mobility during your stay.

For those that would like to come by land but would rather not drive, we can also arrange a driver for you. Please ask for a quotation of this service.

Driving Directions to El Remanso

If you drive from San José consider a 7 to 9 hours travel time, depending on the stops, weather and road condition.
From San José take the Inter-American Highway south (direction Cartago) to San Isidro. You will cross the Cerro de la Muerte mountains and it will take you around 3 hours. Once in San Isidro take the road direction to Dominical and from there continue on the coastal road south to Palmar Sur, which will take you around 2 hours. Once there drive towards Chacarita where you will see a big service station on your right. The right turn to Puerto Jiménez is directly after the service station. On this paved road you will drive around 44 km to Rincón where the pavement ends and 33 more km will take you through La Palma and continuing to Puerto Jiménez, a total of around 2 hours drive. Once in Puerto Jimenez, you only have 22 km more to go in direction to Carate and it will take you around 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to us. You will have to cross several little creeks before you get to the lodge, some of which have a small bridge to cross over (these little bridges are very basic and narrow, so please drive slowly and be careful). At a certain point you will see a school on your right (Carbonera Primary School). You will only have 4 km more to go, during which you will climb some steep hills. You will find our entrance on the left side of the road. We strongly advise you to arrive at El Remanso before dark as the drive is much nicer and easier with day light.
